Homeschool Winners

I have commented before on my belief that money will not fix the major problems with public education system. One alternative to fixing the public school problems is to avoid the problems all together. One way to do that is to homeschool your children. Now this is not a task to be taken lightly. I have several very close friends who homeschool their children. My wife has even started with our 30 month old. None of these parents have an easy job. The bright side of homeschooling is that there are kids out there who are proving that they are a force to be dealt when competing against children who attend public school. I want to share a few stories I found this week that highlight the achievements of some homeschooled kids.

First is from my home state of South Carolina. Lizzy Tyler was crowned South Carolina's Junior Miss in July of 2004. She was awarded an $8,000 scholarship. She will be participating in the last America's Junior Miss competition to be held in Mobile, Alabama next month. The America's Junior Miss program will close after this year.

The second kid I want to highlight is Nathan Cornelius of Minnesota. This homeschooler won the National Geographic Bee this month in Washington D.C. He walked away with a $25,000 scholarship for his efforts.

Christy Reid is a fifth grader from Idaho. She recently won the National Arbor Day Poster Contest. She and her family were flown to Washington D.C. where her poster was unveiled at the US Botantic Garden and a tree was planted in her name.

These are just a few examples that prove homeschooling can prepare children to function in society. I have found some Internet resources on homeschooling. There is a huge network of homeschool mothers with blogs out there too.
